Our Story
This narrative budget is our community’s way of showing how your giving supports and partners in the mission and ministry of God’s church at St. Margaret in-the-Pines. Too often, we look at the church’s line-item budget for this purpose, especially at Vestry. Although a line-item budget keeps track of church income and expenses, it reveals little about how your givings partner is serving our ministry. A narrative budget shows the purposes and goals of our parish and focuses attention on mission and ministry. This Narrative Budget tells our story…the story of the community of St. Margaret in-the-Pines Anglican Church.
It answers questions such as . . .
- How are donations to St. Margaret in-the-Pines used?
- How do we partner with and support mission and ministry?
- What is being accomplished in the community?
2021 Highlights:
- Connecting with the community through Online Service
- Nurturing our relationship with the surrounding community
- Improvements to our property:
o Completed the Historic Chapel repairs
o Renovation and rental of the Curates Residence
o Replacement of some of the windows
- Lent and Advent Bible Study
- Advent and Lent Taize
- Wednesday night Compline
- New technology including camers and sound mixer that enhances our online services
Investing in Our Ministries
Our parish has six major areas of ministry:
- Parish Life & Fellowship
- Pastoral Care
- Education and Faith Formation
- Worship and Music
- Outreach
- Evangelism
Our expenditures include wages and benefits, diocesan allotment, maintenance, property costs, etc., but rather than thinking of these as expenditures, we think of them as investments in ministry, and by God’s grace, as partnering with God in God’s ministry.
We are striving to be a thriving and financially self-sufficient parish.
When you give to St. Margaret in-the-Pines, your donations make a difference in the lives and hopes of others through one or more areas of these ministries.
Using a spreadsheet, we’ve carefully allocated all our “investments” to our six areas of ministry and calculated our planned ministry investments for 2022.
Here are our investments in ministry expressed as a pie chart:

With that being said, the goal this year will be to keep connected with those in need. Updating a list of pacific needs and incorporating other programs and services within the church. This will improve communication with parishioners. GUIDELINES FOR GIVING
Luke 12:34
“For your heart will always be where your riches are”.
” Joyful Giving requires that we put God’s priorities before our own, that we put the support of God’s Church and its mission before our own pleasure and comfort. Joyful giving involves four principles: it must be a gift, it is planned, it is proportionate, and it is a sacrifice. It comes from our substance, not our excess. This act can lead us into a closer relationship with God because if we are giving an amount that is truly a sacrifice, we are expressing the belief that our security lies not in our material wealth but in God”. Diocese of Toronto, Joyful
GIVE AS RESPONSE TO GOD’S GOODNESS
“Every good and perfect gift is from above…” (James 1:17). Therefore, we give out of gratefulness for what we have received.
GIVE TO FOCUS ON GOD AS OUR SOURCE AND SECURITY
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33)
GIVE TO BLESS OTHERS
“I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing”. (Genesis 12:2). If we are blessed with resources beyond our needs, it is not for the purpose of living more lavishly but to bless others. We are blessed to be a blessing.
Parish Income
“For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him”. Romans 10:12
The following chart shows a breakdown of our actual receipts ($289,368) compared to budget ($286,900) as of December 31, 2021.
Many Anglicans give their time and talent in abundance. But when it comes to escalating heating costs, offering adequate incomes for clergy, and supporting a multitude of ministries, their gifts of treasure often fall short of parish needs.
Step Chart
This is a breakdown of our congregation’s giving patterns in 2021. Identify your current level of giving. Where are you on the chart?

Joyful givers experience the spiritual benefits of generosity in their own lives – a deepened trust in God, a reordering of personal priorities and the experience of God’s abundance providing for their own needs.
Envelope Giving and Pre-Authorized (PAG)
It is our hope that the number of regular givers will continue to grow along with the number of parishioners who give through Pre-Authorized Givings (PAG). Currently there are only 18 PAR givers; our target is 25. PAG donations are convenient, regular, and can be easily arranged through our Envelope Secretary. A form and guide is included in this package for your consideration.
Loving God and Loving Your Neighbour
The annual stewardship pledge drive is a multi-week program that mostly emphasizes the important role finances play in continuing the work of our congregation. During this time, we generally thank our members for their past offerings and invite each household to consider how they have been blessed by God. Through regular offerings, special gifts, and planned giving, families can do together what they cannot do alone. Your financial gifts support the mission and ministry of our congregation. The 14% portion of your offerings that we dedicate for Outreach is our direct response to God’s call that we help the poor and needy, heal the sick, and comfort the oppressed. Giving to the church is a way of loving God and your neighbour.
The chart below shows how to offer a specific portion of your income to God and your neighbour every week. While stewardship is about so much more than money, it is impossible to avoid talking about the need for adequate financial support. Stewardship is the way in which we use all the resources that God has entrusted to our care – including our income – so that we can love God and our neighbour. Stewardship is a matter of the heart and a response to the love that God has shown to us. Stewardship is partnering with God’s mission through the church as God fills us with His own love and gives us FAITH.
