Lenten Quiet Day

The Psalmist knew the beauty of stillness. “Be still,” the psalmist says, “and know that I am God.”

This kind of stillness feels elusive to us. We ache to know the stillness that brings us rest, but isn’t there something on Netflix right now? Wait, let me check my texts first. Hold on, something else has come up. Before we know it, we are swimming around in a sea of notifications and updates with direction.

Nothing is more precious than our attention, but we give it away without cost. I mean, who can blame us? Click-bait and FOMO are now common words in the English language. Advertising, the latest news notification, work, and family are constantly demanding our attention. We live in an at-tention economy where the first casualty is peace.

Amongst the noise I remember a saying, “if you could do it yourself you would have done it already.” I think of this saying whenever I go running with my running partner, but it is true for stillness as well. We need help to be still, or at least to wanting a little less noise.

As a church this Lent I invite us to acknowledge our distracted selves and our need for help in practising being still by turning to the One who prom-ises us rest. The bible calls this acknowledging and this turning “repent-ance,” which is what Lent is all about.

St. Margaret in-the-Pines invites you to a Quiet day where we can learn to be still together. The day will begin at 10am and end at 1pm with three brief meditations offered on the theme of repentance. We hope you will come and discover anew the beauty of being still before God.
